Comment on "restoring the density-gradient expansion for exchange in solids and surfaces".

Popular modern generalized gradient approximations are biased toward the description of free-atom energies. Restoration of the first-principles gradient expansion for exchange over a wide range of density gradients eliminates this bias. We introduce a revised Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized gradient approximation that improves equilibrium properties of densely packed solids and their surfaces.

Construction of a generalized gradient approximation by restoring the density-gradient expansion and enforcing a tight Lieb-Oxford bound.

Recently, a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to the density functional, called PBEsol, was optimized (one parameter) against the jellium-surface exchange-correlation energies, and this, in conjunction with changing another parameter to restore the first-principles gradient expansion for exchange, was sufficient to yield accurate lattice constants of solids. Here, we construct a new GGA ...

Workhorse semilocal density functional for condensed matter physics and quantum chemistry.

Semilocal density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy are needed for large electronic systems. The Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria (TPSS) meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) is semilocal and usefully accurate, but predicts too-long lattice constants. Recent "GGA's for solids" yield good lattice constants but poor atomization energies of molecules. We show that the cons...

The exchange energy in the local Airy gas approximation

The Airy gas model of the edge electron gas is used to construct an exchange-energy functional which is an alternative to those obtained in the local density and generalized gradient approximations. Test calculations for rare gas atoms, molecules, solids and surfaces show that the Airy gas functional performs better than the local density approximation in all cases and better than the generaliz...

Molecular and Solid-State Tests of Density Functional Approximations: LSD, GGAs, and Meta-GGAs

Results from numerical tests of nine approximate exchange]correlation energy functionals are reported for various systems—atoms, molecules, surfaces, and Ž . bulk solids. The functional forms can be divided into three categories: 1 the local spin Ž . Ž . Ž . Ž . density LSD approximation, 2 generalized gradient approximations GGAs , and 3 meta-GGAs. In addition to the spin densities and their f...
